Training Program on Promotion of Niche Crops Under Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) Held at Ramban

Jammu, October 09 (KIP)-A one-day training program under the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) on the “Promotion of Niche Crops in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir” was successfully conducted in Ramban in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ramban, SKUAST-Jammu on 09-10-24. The program aimed to educate and empower local anardana (wild pomegranate) growers by imparting knowledge on best practices for enhancing crop quality and marketability.
The event was inaugurated by Prof. Parshant Bakshi, Head of the Division of Fruit Science, SKUAST-J, and Principal Investigator of the HADP project. In his address, Prof. Bakshi emphasized the significance of the HADP project and its role in promoting niche crops like anardana in the region. He spoke extensively about the optimal harvesting stage and drying techniques, which are critical in maintaining the quality of anardana. He also highlighted the economic potential of expanding the cultivation area for this crop, noting that both the fruit and its peel provide high returns for the growers, offering substantial economic benefits to the farming community.
Dr. RajKumar Gupta, Head of KVK, Ramban, addressed the socio-economic importance of anardana cultivation, underscoring its contribution to the livelihood of local growers. He stressed that the promotion of such niche crops not only strengthens the agricultural economy but also enhances the living standards of the rural populace.
In her presentation, Dr. Kiran Kour, Professor, discussed various value addition techniques for anardana, encouraging growers to explore diversified products that could enhance their profitability in the market.
Dr. Parveen Kumar, Scientist at KVK, Ramban, provided insights into the various farmer-centric activities organized by KVK for the betterment of the region's agricultural community. His presentation showcased the ongoing initiatives aimed at providing technical and advisory support to farmers, fostering sustainable agricultural practices in Ramban.
The training session also featured interactive discussions, with anardana growers from the region sharing their experiences and challenges in cultivation and marketing. Their active participation enriched the event, providing practical insights into the ground realities faced by farmers. The resource persons were felicitated by momento.
The program was also attended by local experts Mr. Zahid Sheikh and Mr. Mohsin, who contributed to the discussions and shared their perspectives on the potential of niche crops in the region.
The training concluded with a positive response from anardana growers, who expressed their gratitude for the valuable information shared and vowed to implement the knowledge gained in their farming practices.
