Global Celebrations for the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation

Awantipora,January 20 (KIP)- As part of the worldwide celebrations for the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP 2025), the Department of Planning & Geomatics, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) in collaboration with the Center of Excellence (CoE) for Glacial Studies at the University of Kashmir, is organizing a high-level brainstorming session on January 21, 2025. The event, themed "Himalayan Cryosphere: Major Research Gaps and Shaping the Roadmap Ahead", will address critical issues and explore opportunities in cryosphere science.
The program will feature several talks by prominent glaciologists, with the Lead Talk to be delivered by Prof. Shakil A. Romshoo, a renowned glaciologist, Vice-Chancellor of IUST, and head of the National Cryosphere Lab at the University of Kashmir. This event will bring together leading experts, researchers, and policymakers to discuss the urgent need to enhance our understanding of the Himalayan cryosphere, which plays a critical role in water security, climate regulation, and regional ecosystems. Discussions will focus on identifying key research gaps, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and establishing a roadmap for sustainable glacier preservation.
The event aligns with the official launch of IYGP 2025, a United Nations initiative aimed at promoting global awareness and coordinated efforts to safeguard glaciers, which are vital for ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods.
