Chanakya Statue Cleaned and Honored on World Brahmin Day in Jammu
02/06/2026

Jammu, June 01 (KIP)-No special event was organized at the Brahmin Sabha premises at Parade Ground on the occasion of World Brahmin Day. Visitors who reached the venue said that no celebration or activity related to the day was visible, leading to disappointment among many members of the community.
The Brahmin community is widely regarded as a pillar of India's cultural, spiritual, and intellectual heritage. Religious and social ceremonies continue to be conducted under the guidance of Brahmins. Therefore, the absence of any observance on such an important day at one of Jammu's prominent Brahmin institutions came as a surprise to many. During the visit, it was also observed that the name board of the Brahmin Sabha had faded considerably, while the signboard of Jammu and Kashmir Bank located in the same building appeared far more prominent. Some local residents felt that the institution seemed to be drifting away from its original purpose and identity.
The statue of Acharya Chanakya installed outside the Sabha premises was also found in a neglected condition. Dust had accumulated on the statue, and the surrounding area lacked proper maintenance. Visitors said that the statue had not received adequate care for a long time. On the occasion, social worker Ashwani Sharma took the initiative to clean the statue of Acharya Chanakya. He ceremonially washed the statue with water, performed a milk abhishek, and offered flowers as a mark of respect. He also extended greetings to the people on World Brahmin Day.
Speaking on the occasion, Ashwani Sharma expressed deep disappointment over the lack of any activity at the Brahmin Sabha. He said, “It is painful to see no observance of such a sacred and important day. The Brahmin community has preserved the light of knowledge, culture, and values for centuries. The neglect of our great personalities and symbols is a matter of concern. Acharya Chanakya is not only an icon of the Brahmin community but a priceless national figure. Seeing the condition of his statue deeply saddened me. That is why I felt it necessary to personally clean the statue and pay my respects.” Sharma further stated that in 2021, Brahmin organizations across the world decided to celebrate June 1 every year as World Brahmin Day.
Since the exact birth date of Acharya Chanakya is not historically confirmed, the day is observed as his symbolic birth anniversary, known as Chanakya Janmotsav. He described Chanakya as a great statesman, diplomat, strategist, and author of the famous treatise Arthashastra, whose teachings continue to inspire society and governance even today. He added that on World Brahmin Day, Brahmin families and organizations around the world remember their ancestors, reaffirm their commitment to Sanatan culture, and organize havans, prayers, blood donation camps, and various social service activities. Discussions on Chanakya’s principles, national unity, and social welfare are also held on the occasion. People present at the venue expressed hope that World Brahmin Day would be observed in Jammu with greater enthusiasm, dignity, and participation in the coming years, and that meaningful efforts would be made to preserve the cultural and intellectual heritage of the community.
