Changthang Expedition Featuring BMW Motorrad Riders Flagged Off from Shanti Stupa, Leh

Leh, June 08 (KIP)-The Changthang Expedition, featuring BMW Motorrad riders, was officially flagged off from the iconic Shanti Stupa, Leh, by Shri Sanjit Rodrigues, Administrative Secretary, Tourism, UT Ladakh. The expedition includes 19 accomplished riders from Maharashtra, recognized for their expertise in long-distance and high-altitude motorcycling, who have embarked on an extraordinary high-altitude journey across Ladakh’s remote and pristine Changthang region.
The Changthang Expedition offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Ladakh’s most breathtaking landscapes. Stretching across the vast high-altitude plateau of eastern Ladakh, the region is defined by its dramatic terrain, sweeping open horizons, and renowned destinations such as the shimmering Pangong Tso and the tranquil Tso Moriri lakes. The expedition route also includes traversing Umling La, among the highest motorable roads in the world, and a visit to Hanle, home to India’s first Dark Sky Reserve and a world-class astronomical observatory, known for its exceptional stargazing conditions.
At the flag-off ceremony held at Shanti Stupa, Shri Sanjit Rodrigues, engaged with the riders, sharing his appreciation for such initiatives that highlight Ladakh as a premier global destination for adventure tourism.
During his interaction, he emphasized the importance of safe, responsible, and sustainable riding practices, particularly in ecologically sensitive and high-altitude terrains.
He encouraged the participants to approach the expedition not only as an adventure but also as a responsibility, urging them to respect local traditions, protect fragile ecosystems, and remain mindful of wildlife. He also motivated the participants to act as ambassadors of Ladakh, sharing their experiences responsibly and contributing to the promotion of sustainable tourism in the region.
Designed as a premium high-altitude riding experience, the expedition blends adventure with responsible tourism. It is supported by the Department of Tourism, UT Ladakh, along with experienced on-ground teams ensuring proper safety measures, logistics, and regulatory compliance throughout the journey. Participants have been encouraged to document and share their journey through social media in collaboration with Ladakh Tourism, helping showcase the region’s unique beauty to a wider audience.
