CEC Kargil Attends Concluding Ceremony of Environmental Week 2026

Kargil, June 12 (KIP)-Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, today attended the concluding ceremony of Environmental Week 2026, marked by a grand awareness march and prize distribution ceremony organized by the Municipal Committee Kargil.
Environmental Week was observed from June 6 to June 12, 2026, with a series of activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness, cleanliness, and sustainable waste management practices across the district.
The programme commenced with introductory remarks by Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Kargil, Ayaz Ahmed Bhat, who welcomed the chief guest, dignitaries, officials, teachers, students, and participants. He highlighted the objectives of Environmental Week and outlined the various activities conducted during the week, including plantation drives, awareness campaigns, cleanliness initiatives, and inter-school competitions. He emphasized the importance of public participation and collective efforts in preserving the environment and maintaining cleanliness in the district.
During the week-long observance, Municipal Committee Kargil organized extensive plantation drives and planted nearly 200 saplings at the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Plant and the Legacy Waste Site to enhance green cover and promote ecological conservation.
As part of the celebrations, an Inter-School Competition was organized on the themes of “Waste to Art,” “Waste to Wealth,” and environmental awareness. Students from various educational institutions enthusiastically participated and showcased innovative ideas on recycling, waste management, and environmental protection through creative models, artwork, and presentations.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon underscored the importance of environmental awareness among students and the general public. He appreciated the dedicated services of the frontline sanitation workers and employees of the Municipal Committee Kargil for their tireless efforts in maintaining cleanliness and promoting a healthy environment.
Dr Akhoon stressed that environmental conservation is not solely the responsibility of government agencies but requires active participation and individual responsibility from every citizen. He urged people to adopt environmentally responsible practices in their daily lives and contribute towards building a cleaner and greener society.
CEC also expressed hope that such noble initiatives would continue in the future, fostering greater environmental consciousness and encouraging community participation in sustainable development.
The week-long programme culminated with a grand awareness march from Drass Stand to the Municipal Committee Yard, in which students, officials, and members of the public participated. The march aimed to spread awareness regarding environmental protection, cleanliness, and responsible waste management.
The valedictory function held at the Municipal Committee Yard witnessed the participation of distinguished dignitaries, officers, teachers, students, and representatives from various departments. During the programme, prizes and certificates were distributed among the winners and participants of the inter-school competitions in recognition of their creativity and commitment towards environmental stewardship.
The dignitaries present on the occasion emphasized the significance of scientific waste management, community involvement in maintaining cleanliness, and the need for collective efforts to build a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable Kargil.
Speaking during the concluding session, Additional District Development Commissioner, Ghulam Mohammad, delivered the vote of thanks. He expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, participating departments, educational institutions, students, sanitation workers, volunteers, and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful observance of Environmental Week 2026. He appreciated the efforts of Municipal Committee Kargil for organizing meaningful activities throughout the week and reiterated the importance of continued cooperation from all sections of society in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar, Additional District Development Commissioner Ghulam Mohammad, Joint Director Planning/Chief Planning Officer Kacho Mohammad Hussain, Tehsildar Kargil-cum-Executive Officer Municipal Committee Ayaz Ahmed Bhat, Deputy Superintendent Headquarters Innayatullah Khan, DySP DAR Tundup Dorjay, officers from various departments, teachers, students, sanitation workers, and members of the public.
Municipal Committee Kargil extended its gratitude to all participating schools, departments, stakeholders, and citizens for their valuable contributions towards the successful celebration of Environmental Week 2026.
